Anise

Anise (Pimpinella anisum) seeds are a highly prized carminative and expectorant spice containing rich volatile oils, dominated by trans-anethole. Trans-anethole is absorbed systemically and excreted partly through the lungs, where it directly stimulates the bronchial glands to secrete thin mucus, while relaxing smooth bronchial muscles to quiet dry coughs. In the gut, it relaxes intestinal sphincters to ease abdominal bloating and cramps.

What Anise is used for

  • Dry Hacking Cough
  • Bronchial Congestion
  • Flatulence
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal Cramping
  • Lactation Support (Galactagogue)

Pharmaceuticals Anise is studied as a natural alternative to

  • Guaifenesin (Mucinex)
  • Simethicone (Gas-X)
  • Expectorant cough syrups
