Sarsaparilla (Smilax ornata or Smilax regelii) is a climbing vine native to Central and South America whose root has been used for centuries by indigenous peoples and later in Western herbal medicine. It gained fame as a 'blood purifier' and treatment for syphilis in the 16th century. Today it is used primarily for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and skin-clearing properties. It contains plant sterols like sarsasaponin and sitosterol which may support hormonal balance.
