The bark of Salix alba, the botanical ancestor of synthetic aspirin. It contains salicin, which is metabolized into salicylic acid in the liver. It inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) to relieve pain and inflammation with significantly lower risk of gastric ulceration than synthetic NSAIDs.
