Valeriana officinalis root contains valerenic acids and iridoids (valepotriates) that inhibit the enzyme GABA transaminase, increasing synaptic gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) concentrations. This reduces brain excitability, shortens sleep latency, and enhances deep non-REM restorative sleep.
