Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) is a premier demulcent herb whose root contains up to 35% mucilage, a thick polysaccharide gel. When cold-infused, this mucilage swells to form a highly viscous, protective coating that directly adheres to and soothes irritated, inflamed mucous membranes. It works systemically: by coating the esophagus and stomach, it shields tissues from corrosive acid, and through reflex irritation of the vagus nerve, it calms dry, spasmodic coughing fits.
Educational information only — never stop or change a prescribed medication without talking to your prescriber first.
IMPORTANT: Because the thick mucilage can slow the absorption of other substances, take other oral medications at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after consuming marshmallow root preparations.
