Burnet (Sanguisorba officinalis or Sanguisorba minor) contains exceptionally high levels of condensed tannins, triterpenoid saponins, and flavonoids. These active constituents exert a powerful astringent and local hemostatic (bleeding-stopping) action. It precipitates tissue proteins to form a protective, drying barrier over irritated mucous membranes in the gut and mouth, quickly stemming diarrhea and bleeding gums while promoting wound closure.

Due to its high tannin content, do not use continuously for more than 2 weeks, as it may cause stomach irritation or interfere with iron absorption. Avoid during pregnancy unless supervised by a physician.
