Barberry (Berberis vulgaris) is a deciduous shrub containing the high-potency isoquinoline alkaloid berberine in its roots and bark. Berberine is a powerful broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that inhibits the growth of pathogens, including bacteria, fungi, and protozoa, by disrupting cell membrane integrity. It also activates AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) to improve insulin sensitivity and stimulates bile secretion to relieve gallbladder congestion.

CRITICAL: Do not use during pregnancy or lactation, as berberine can cause uterine contractions and may cross the placenta to cause kernicterus in newborns. High doses may cause gastrointestinal discomfort or constipation.
