The leaves and pods of Senna alexandrina, containing anthraquinone glycosides (sennosides A and B). Sennosides pass unabsorbed to the colon, where colonic bacteria cleave them into active rhein anthrone, stimulating myenteric plexus contractions (peristalsis) and active water secretion into the bowel within 6-12 hours.
